Accidents involving 18-wheelers and large trucks continue to be a problem for motorists on the roads of Texas and America. Every year thousands of motorists are killed in accidents involving 18-wheelers. Statistics from 2006, the last year statistics were made available, show that more than 126,000 people were injured.
One of the primary causes for Truck and Semi Accidents is having drivers on the road who are unfit to be driving. Hundreds of deaths and injuries have occurred from drivers who have blacked out, or suffered major health problems while driving vehicles that weigh 40 tons or more, according to a new US Study obtained by the Associated Press.
While more stringent regulations have been proposed in 2001 by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association, the agency responsible for monitoring unfit truckers, they have admitted that none of the eight regulations proposed have been completed. These recommendations include setting standards for determining whether truckers are safe to drive and to cut out the practice of “doctor shopping” to find doctors that will declare drivers fit for the road when it is not the case.
Another concern is that the new policies will add additional costs to the truckers making them more likely to try to evade the new rules.
Because of the slow rate in which these policies are being implemented and a seeming unwillingness by some in the trucking industry to conform, the chance of accidents occurring due to unfit truckers will continue.
